What are Lorcana cards?

Disney Lorcana is a trading card game where players take on the role of Illumineers, magical figures who summon Disney characters called glimmers. Each card shows a character, item, action, song or location, often in a new version you will not have seen in the films. You might find Mickey Mouse as a wizard, Elsa as a spirit of winter or Buzz Lightyear exploring a jungle.
Every set adds around 200 new Lorcana cards, and the game is designed so that new players can learn it quickly while experienced players can build clever decks.
How to play Disney Lorcana
The aim is simple: be the first player to collect 20 lore. You gain lore by sending your characters on quests, and you can challenge your opponent’s characters to stop them questing.
- Build a deck of at least 60 cards, using one or two ink colours and no more than four copies of any card.
- Ink your cards. Some cards can be placed face down into your inkwell to give you ink, the resource you spend to play other cards.
- Play characters, items, actions and locations by paying their ink cost.
- Quest to gain lore or challenge your opponent’s characters.
- Win at 20 lore.
Songs are a special kind of action. Characters can sing a song instead of paying its ink cost, which leads to fun combinations.
Types of Lorcana cards
- Characters: the heart of the game. Characters quest for lore and challenge other characters.
- Actions: one-off effects that are played and then discarded.
- Songs: special actions that a character can sing instead of you paying the ink cost.
- Items: cards that stay in play and give ongoing benefits.
- Locations: places your characters can move to, which can give lore of their own.
Each card shows its ink cost, its ink colour and whether it can be placed in your inkwell. Characters also show their strength, willpower and the lore they gain when questing.
The six ink colours
| Ink | Style of play |
|---|---|
| Amber | Support, healing and teamwork |
| Amethyst | Magic, tricks and card draw |
| Emerald | Speed, evasion and surprise |
| Ruby | Aggression and challenges |
| Sapphire | Planning, items and ramping ink |
| Steel | Strength, defence and control |
Most decks combine two inks, so there are many pairings to try. Choosing your favourite characters and building around their inks is a great way to start.

Lorcana card rarities
Lorcana cards use eight rarities. The symbol at the bottom of each card shows which one it is:
| Rarity | What to know |
|---|---|
| Common | The most frequent cards in each pack |
| Uncommon | A step up, several per pack |
| Rare | Usually one or more per pack |
| Super Rare | Harder to find |
| Legendary | Rare, powerful cards |
| Epic | A special full-art rarity added in later sets |
| Enchanted | Ultra-rare full-art versions with a shimmering foil |
| Iconic | The rarest cards in recent sets |
Every pack also contains a foil card, which can be of any rarity. Enchanted and Iconic cards are the ones collectors chase most.
Enchanted Lorcana cards
Enchanted cards are the most famous chase in Lorcana. They are alternate versions of existing cards with artwork that covers the whole card and a special shimmering foil. Because they appear far less often than other cards, opening an Enchanted is one of the highlights of collecting. Recent sets have added an even rarer Iconic tier, often with a distinctive art style, such as the papercut-style Iconic cards in Winterspell.
What is in a Lorcana booster pack?
Each Disney Lorcana booster pack contains 12 cards, including one foil card. A booster display holds 24 packs, so it is the best way to open a lot of cards at once and has the best chance of finding Enchanted cards.
How Lorcana sets are released
Ravensburger currently releases about four main Lorcana sets a year. Each set usually has prerelease events in local game stores about a week before the wide release, giving players an early chance to open packs and play. There are also special releases, such as the cooperative Illumineer’s Quest products, which let you team up with friends against a story-driven challenge.

Which Lorcana product should you buy first?

- For complete beginners: the Wilds Unknown 2-Player Starter Set includes two ready-to-play decks so you can learn with a friend.
- For collecting: a booster display, such as the Wilds Unknown booster display, gives you 24 packs.
- For a gift: the Wilds Unknown Illumineer’s Trove includes packs plus a storage box and dividers.
- For a stylish start: the Winterspell Collection Starter Set includes a portfolio, a foil Stitch card and booster packs.
English, Japanese and Chinese Lorcana cards
Disney Lorcana is also printed in other languages. Japanese Lorcana has become popular with collectors thanks to its print quality, and we stock Japanese boxes such as The First Chapter and Wilds Unknown. Chinese Lorcana boxes, including Rise of the Floodborn, Into the Inklands and Shimmering Skies, are another way to collect the artwork.

Collecting Lorcana cards
Lorcana is as popular with collectors as it is with players. Many people aim to complete a full set of each release, while others focus on a favourite film or character. Enchanted cards are the main chase, with Iconic cards adding an even rarer tier in recent sets.
- Sleeve your foils. Foil cards scratch easily, so sleeve them straight away.
- Collect by film. Building a binder of your favourite Disney film is a fun goal.
- Keep sets together. Each card shows its set number, which makes tracking simple.
- Trade duplicates. Local game stores often run trading nights.
Playing Lorcana in the UK

Many UK game stores run Lorcana leagues and set championships, and new sets usually have prerelease events a week before launch. Playing in a store is a great way to meet other players, learn new decks and trade cards.
Older Lorcana sets
Older sets are still popular, especially with collectors who want to complete the whole story from the start. Booster boxes from earlier releases, such as Ursula’s Return, Shimmering Skies and Azurite Sea, become harder to find over time, so it is worth picking them up while they are in stock. They are also a fun way to find classic characters that may not appear in newer sets.
Is Disney Lorcana good for beginners?
Yes. The rules are straightforward, games are quick and the Disney characters make it easy to pick up for players of all ages. A two-player starter set is the easiest way in, and from there you can add booster packs to build your own decks.
Tips for buying Lorcana cards
- Start with a starter set to learn the rules before buying lots of packs.
- Buy booster displays for collecting. They give the best value per pack.
- Check which set you are buying. Each set has its own cards and themes.
- Buy sealed from trusted shops to avoid fake or resealed packs.
