Lorwyn Eclipsed release date

MTG Lorwyn Eclipsed Play Booster Box

The tabletop release date for MTG Lorwyn Eclipsed was 23 January 2026. The set debuted on 5 January, the full card image gallery followed on 12 January and prerelease events ran at local game stores from 16 to 22 January. On MTG Arena, the digital version of the game, it arrived on 20 January.

Competitive players got their first big look at the set at Pro Tour Lorwyn Eclipsed from 30 January to 1 February 2026.

A return to Lorwyn and Shadowmoor

Lorwyn first appeared in 2007 as a bright, fairy-tale world of kithkin, elves, giants and faeries. Its sister set, Shadowmoor, showed the same plane after a great change turned it dark and twisted. MTG Lorwyn Eclipsed brings both sides together, with a light and dark theme running through the whole set.

For long-time players, it is a nostalgic return after around 18 years. For newer players, it is a fresh, colourful world with strong creature-type themes.

The story of Lorwyn Eclipsed

The set invites players to cross the boundary between eternal day and eternal night. In the story, the plane shifts between its bright Lorwyn side and its shadowy Shadowmoor side, and the characters you meet change with it. That idea of light and dark sits behind many of the set’s double-sided cards, which show two sides of the same character or place.

Creature types to look out for

Lorwyn has always been about its peoples. In MTG Lorwyn Eclipsed you will find the small, close-knit kithkin, proud elves, mischievous faeries, rowdy boggarts, towering giants and many more. Each group has its own play style, and the changeling creatures that count as every type tie them all together.

Building a kindred deck

Kindred decks focus on one creature type and use cards that reward you for having lots of that type in play. In Lorwyn Eclipsed, that might mean an elf deck that grows its army, a faerie deck that plays tricks at instant speed or a kithkin deck that goes wide with small creatures. Start with the creature type you like most and add hybrid cards to give the deck more options.

Returning mechanics

  • Hybrid mana: cards that can be paid for with either of two colours, giving deck builders more flexibility.
  • Evoke: pay a cheaper alternative cost to get a creature’s effect, then sacrifice it.
  • Persist: creatures that come back after dying, with a -1/-1 counter.
  • Changeling: creatures that count as every creature type, perfect for kindred decks.

Double-sided cards also play a big role, and -1/-1 counters return as a key theme. The set leans heavily on creature types, so decks built around elves, goblins, faeries or other kindred groups are a big part of the experience.

Play Boosters vs Collector Boosters

MTG Secrets of Strixhaven Play Booster Box, another 2026 Magic set

Play Boosters are the standard packs for Magic. They are designed to be opened and played in Draft or Sealed games, and they also contain a chance at rare and special versions of cards. A Lorwyn Eclipsed Play Booster Box holds 30 packs.

Collector Boosters are premium packs built for collectors. They contain more foils and special treatments, and some cards are only found in Collector Boosters, such as the Japan Showcase cards, the reversible shock lands and the serial-numbered double rainbow foil Bitterbloom Bearer.

Collecting MTG Lorwyn Eclipsed

Lorwyn Eclipsed is a strong set for collectors. Highlights include:

  • Fable frame cards, found in both non-foil and foil in Play and Collector Boosters.
  • Japan Showcase cards, exclusive to Collector Boosters.
  • Reversible shock lands with new artwork.
  • The serialised Bitterbloom Bearer, the set’s rarest card.

If you are mainly collecting, Collector Boosters give you the best chance at these special versions. If you want to play and still enjoy some surprises, Play Boosters are the better value.

Draft Night: a new way to play

Lorwyn Eclipsed introduced Draft Night, a box designed for a draft with friends at home. It contains 12 Play Boosters, one Collector Booster, 90 basic lands and 10 double-sided tokens, and it uses a Pick-Two Draft format, where players take two cards at a time. The Collector Booster makes a great prize for the winner.

Commander decks

Two preconstructed Commander decks launched alongside the main set. Commander is Magic’s most popular casual format, where each player uses a 100-card deck led by a legendary creature. The decks are ready to play straight out of the box, so they are a great way to try the Lorwyn and Shadowmoor theme in multiplayer games.

Prerelease events

Prerelease events are the first chance to play a new set. Players open a special prerelease pack and build a deck on the day, then play a few relaxed rounds. For Lorwyn Eclipsed, prereleases ran a week before the tabletop release, and many stores also ran a Commander Box League at the same time.

Lorwyn: First Light

Ahead of the main set, Wizards of the Coast released Lorwyn: First Light, a Dungeons and Dragons tie-in, on 18 November 2025. It gave fans of both games a first taste of the returning plane before MTG Lorwyn Eclipsed arrived.

Which Lorwyn Eclipsed product should you buy?

  • For the most packs: the Play Booster Box gives you 30 packs.
  • For collectors: Collector Boosters have the rarest versions of cards.
  • For Commander players: one of the two Commander decks.
  • For new players: a Theme deck or the Bundle.

Is MTG Lorwyn Eclipsed good for new players?

Yes. The fairy-tale setting is easy to enjoy, the creature-type themes make deck building simple to understand and Theme decks give you a ready-made deck to learn with. If you are completely new to Magic, start with a Theme deck, then add Play Boosters to build your own deck.
